CRIME NEWS
- ➤ ICE arrested 48 immigrants lacking permanent legal status during a weeklong enhanced enforcement operation in Albuquerque, Roswell and Santa Fe, with 20 convicted of serious offenses and the remaining detained for illegal entry without criminal records—immigrants' rights advocates have filed a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security citing concerns over the unknown detention conditions and disappearance of these New Mexicans. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ The USDA ended funding for the Regional Farm to Food Bank Program—created to support local food producers through the NM Grown program—leaving Food Depot and local farmers uncertain about future support. Local officials said this decision may hurt the rural economy and small businesses in northern New Mexico. KOAT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ On March 12, the Sandoval County Commission honored women's achievements during a proclamation ceremony for Women’s History Month. Commissioner Katherine Bruch noted that women made historic contributions by comprising 45% of county staff, 60% of elected officials, and over a third of the management team—figures that underline their broad impact. - ➤ The New Mexico House passed a baby bond bill Saturday that will create trust funds for all babies born after January 1—with funds available when they turn 18 after graduating high school—to help cover education, housing, entrepreneurship, and investments. State Treasurer Laura Montoya and Rep. Linda Serrato said the bill would reinvest oil and gas revenues into communities, and the measure now heads to the Senate. KOAT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The House passed a budget resolution on February 25 that includes nearly $1.5 to $2 trillion in spending cuts until 2034 and may reduce Medicaid funding, putting essential care for hundreds at risk in New Mexico. Clinical social worker Kenneth Winfrey of Umoja Behavioral Health said the cuts would damage salaries, patient services, and the state’s safety net for vulnerable people. KOAT
