  • New Mexico taxpayers can now use IRS Direct File to file returns free online as the program expands to 25 states—ideal for those with simple tax situations. Filers must complete their returns by the deadline one week from today.  KOAT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill that will let Independent voters join party primaries starting in 2026, allowing about 300,000 people to vote without changing their registration. Sen. Natalie Figueroa said the change is meant to boost turnout, and some opponents worry it could spur strategic voting—potentially favoring more moderate candidates—if voter habits shift.  KOAT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Today, warmer weather is drawing more hikers to local trails even though mountain conditions can change quickly — from sunny base areas to snowy peaks. Jason Fejer from Albuquerque Fire Rescue advised hikers to start early, wear loose clothing, drink plenty of water, and carry food along with a charged phone to stay safe.  KOAT
