COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Rio Rancho was named one of the Top 100 Best Places to Live in the U.S. by Livability—its focus on education, public safety, and job growth placing it among the Top 10 in the Southwest. The city's Chamber of Commerce said new homes in Los Diamantes and the expansion of Paseo del Volcán west to I-40—set to create an industrial corridor—will support further growth.  KOAT

CRIME NEWS

  • A New Mexico State Police officer was arrested in Rio Rancho on May 2 for driving while intoxicated, causing a crash near NM 528 + 550, fleeing the scene and driving recklessly, and he is now on administrative leave while the investigation continues.  Sandoval Signpost

HEALTH NEWS

  • The New Mexico Department of Health is urging residents to use the 5—3—1 method to check air quality on smoky days by viewing landmarks at 5, 3, and 1 mile; people aged 65, young children, and pregnant women should limit outdoor activity if visibility is reduced. The guidance helps locals decide how to protect their health during wildfire smoke events.  KOAT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Professional hockey will return to Rio Rancho when the ECHL expansion team, tentatively called the New Mexico Pro Hockey Club, begins playing at the Rio Rancho Events Center in the 2026 season. REV Entertainment—owner and sports partner of the Texas Rangers—will work with the Dallas Stars for operational guidance as a team-naming contest is planned for this summer.  KOAT
