Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 9th of April.
Good morning, Rio Rancho.
📰 Finance
New Mexico taxpayers can now use IRS Direct File to file returns free online as the program expands to 25 states—ideal for those with simple tax situations.
Filers must complete their returns by the deadline one week from today.
🏛️ Government
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a bill that will let Independent voters join party primaries starting in 2026, allowing about 300,000 people to vote without changing their registration.
Sen. Natalie Figueroa said the change is meant to boost turnout, and some opponents worry it could spur strategic voting—potentially favoring more moderate candidates—if voter habits shift.
📰 Lifestyle
Today, warmer weather is drawing more hikers to local trails even though mountain conditions can change quickly — from sunny base areas to snowy peaks.
Jason Fejer from Albuquerque Fire Rescue advised hikers to start early, wear loose clothing, drink plenty of water, and carry food along with a charged phone to stay safe.
